FACTS ABOUT THE WEIMARANER DOG BREED

Weimaraner Dog Breed

The Weimaraner, affectionately called the Weim or Silver Ghost, is a working dog breed of German origin. It has been bred mainly to hunt big game like deer, wolves, and bear. The breed name was Weimar, the breeding place name.

They’re so lovable. It’s hard not to fall in love with the Weim. He’s magnificent in his smooth silver or grey coat, intelligent blue-grey eyes, and a gait befitting a dog who’s had his fair share of royalty.

TEMPERAMENT OF THE WEIMARANER

  • Affectionate; he loves people, other dogs, and pets

  • Independent; sometimes, he can be high-strung

  • Active; with an energy level like that, he can’t stay idle for too long

PHYSICAL FEATURES

• Simply it is a grey puppy with blue eyes
• The Weim can weigh between 55 and 88 pounds. He may also stand at 22 to 28 inches.
• The eyes may be grey or blue-grey
• The tail is long (sometimes docked) and fully coated
• Weimaraners have a single coat (no undercoat). The outer coat is short, smooth, and available in mouse-grey, silver-grey, or blue-grey colors.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR

• Weimaraners are people-oriented dogs who are like shadows around their families. They’re usually following their human around or snuggling close to them on the couch.
• Weims are highly active dogs. As a result, they aren’t well suited to apartment living. What they require is a large secure space where they can chase, run, or play. Weims owners should ensure that their fence is very secured as their dog can be great with escapes.
• Because of their hunting instincts, Weimaraners tend to go after small animals perceived as prey. They’ll often chase birds, rats, or squirrels if given a chance. That is why they should be held secure on a leash when being taken for a walk.
• As a result of their high energy and intensity, Weims need many exercises and mental stimulation. Without this, they are likely to lean towards destructive behaviors like excessive barking, chewing on your favorite shoe, or digging holes from your yard to China.

SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING

• Weims require at least 60 minutes of daily physical and mental stimulation to stay sound. Engage your dog in activities like walking, jogging, or mock hunting. Also, several dog sports like agility, Frisbee, or flyball would do the trick.
• The Sleek coats on Weims require minimal grooming. Usually, weekly brushing is all you need to keep it healthy and glossy. Also, bathe your dog only when you have to because frequent bathing would dry out his sensitive skin.
• Because of their long hanging ears, Weims are prone to ear infections. Therefore, clean your dog’s ears every couple of weeks with a moistened cotton ball to get rid of possible wax and dirt trapped inside.
• Are Weimaraners hypoallergenic? It is not, due to its long and high density of the dander
