FACTS ABOUT THE ST. BERNARD DOG BREED

Saint Bernard Dog Breed

The giant St. Bernard (who used to be called the Saint, or Barry) is a hero covered in fur. He is a hardworking dog who rescued many avalanche victims and weary travelers in the western Alps of Italy and Switzerland.

The breed got its name from the St. Bernard Hospice, where it was extensively used for rescue missions. They were like angels sent from above to save humanity. Ancient Saints were said to have carried casks containing brandy around their necks from which numb victims could sip before the monks arrived.

So unique was this breed that the most famous Saint, called Barry saved about 40 to 100 human lives during his time. Now, with their Alpine rescue days over, modern Saints are only too happy to be faithful dogs and loyal companions to their human families.

TEMPERAMENT OF THE ST. BERNARD

• Gentle; often called "gentle giant" because of his calm personality
• Friendly; everyone is a potential pal, even strangers
• Loyal; few dogs are as faithful and devoted as the Saint.

PHYSICAL FEATURES

• It is worth repeating that the St. Bernard is a large dog. With his weight around 140 to 260 pounds and his height at 28 to 35 inches, he looks more like a giant.
• The eyes can be either brown or blue.
• The tail is usually long, thick, and heavy.
• The coat, which may be either smooth or rough, comes in a usual shade of red or brindle with patches of white.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR

• Do not mistake the giant size of the Saint for a rigid nature. This gentle giant isn’t difficult at all. He’s amiable, sweet, affectionate, and so easy to get along with it. He does very well with children, only that his size can make kids get accidentally knocked over.
• When a dog has the size of the St. Bernard, he becomes formidable without even lifting a finger. The Saint is an excellent guard dog who uses appearance (not aggression) to have any unwanted visitor running for the hills.
• Because of their size, St. Bernards must be socialized and trained right from puppyhood. That is because, like other big dogs, they might become difficult to control when fully grown.

SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING

• As a hardworking dog breed, the saint bernard dog breeders should exercise them properly for his mental and physical well-being. Take time out to walk your dog for about 30 to 60 minutes every day; it’ll do both of you a world of good.
• Because they grow very fast, St. Bernards are prone to bone problems. So, monitor your dog’s diet and ensure he gets enough calcium and other essential minerals in his meals.
• The Saint’s smooth (or rough) coat is so easy to care for it. All it would ever need to stay clean and healthy is a weekly brushing and an occasional bath.
