FACTS ABOUT THE ROTTWEILER DOG BREED

Rottweiler Dog Breed

The Rottweiler, also called Rottie, is a powerful dog breed of impressive form. He is well-balanced, adequately proportioned, and very muscular. You can’t help but respect the Rottie. When he moves, he depicts noble confidence and self-assuredness. And in his eyes, you’ll see a keen intelligence and alertness that only a Rottweiler can possess.

The Rottweiler developed in Germany around the 19th century. The breed was named after a town called Rottweil. As a working dog breed, they were used to herd livestock and pull meat carts.

Now, modern Rottweilers serve as search and rescue dogs, guard dogs, and affectionate family dogs who would stay devoted to their household throughout their lives.

TEMPERAMENT OF THE ROTTWEILER

Confident; usually self-assured, never shy.

Good-natured; he’s calm and affectionate around his family

Protective; he has an inherent desire to guard or protect

PHYSICAL FEATURES

Rottweilers sport a deep, broad chest with a well-muscled body. They can weigh from 77 to 132 pounds and be as tall as 27 inches.

Their head is medium-sized with a black nose and well-developed nostrils.

The eyes are black and almond-shaped, while the averagely-sized ears are triangular.

The coat is short, thick, and glossy. Rottweilers are always black with rich rust or mahogany markings on the eyes, cheeks, either side of the muzzle, chest, legs, and under the tail.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR

The Rottweiler is a calm and collected dog breed, with an aloof demeanor towards strangers. He’s always confident, never shy, and wouldn’t hesitate to defend his territory against intruders. All of these make him an excellent guard dog.

Rotties are affectionate with their families. They love to be around their humans and are often protective of them. However, this cannot be said for other dogs, especially of the same sex, as Rottweilers can become aggressive when not properly trained or socialized.

Rottweilers are a powerful breed that requires a firm, assertive yet gentle handler. They are not a dog for everyone, especially not for new dog owners. However, for the experienced handler who can provide consistent training and sufficient stimulation, the Rottie will be a suitable companion, loyal guardian, and a friend for life.

SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING

Rottweilers require plenty of exercises coupled with early socialization and training to get them to become best-behaved and controllable.

The easy-care coat of the Rottweiler needs weekly brushing to remove dead hair and encourage the distribution of skin oils.

Brush your dog’s teeth at least two times every week to keep the plaques and tartar away.
