FACTS ABOUT THE CURLY-COATED RETRIEVER DOG BREED
The Curly-coated Retriever (or Curly) is a dog breed of considerable height. This breed was developed in England to retrieve shot water-ducks or fowls. Just as the name implies, the Curly-coated Retriever is unmistakable with the thick mass of curls covering his sturdy frame.
The Curly-coated Retriever is generally the tallest of all retriever breeds, and among the first to be recognized in 1860 by the American Kennel Club. He is energetic, friendly, loyal, and enjoys spending quiet relaxing evenings with his favorite person in the world.
TEMPERAMENT OF THE CURLY-COATED RETRIEVER
• Active; he has a lot of energy to burn
• Intelligent; he is straightforward to train
• Loyal; he’s a devoted family member
PHYSICAL FEATURES
• The Curly-coated Retriever is a graceful, sturdy, and well-rounded dog of a somewhat rectangular frame (he is slightly longer than tall).
• The Curly-coated Retriever is about 23 to 27 inches tall at the withers, although the weight may vary.
• The tight heavy-coat is waterproof and available mostly in solid black and silver colors.
• The color of the eyes (which may be either black or brown) and the nose varies with the coat color.
PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR
• As a hunting dog breed, the Curly-coated retriever is an active dog who requires adequate exercise and mental stimulation. It’s happiest when engaged in dog sports and activities like agility, hunting games, or flyball. However, as a water-retriever, it goes without saying that its favorite pastime is swimming.
• The Curly-coated Retriever is an affectionate dog who enjoys being with his family. Although he can be aloof with strangers, early socialization and training would help him get past his wariness.
• The Curly-coated Retriever is an even-temper and kid-friendly personality. He would also make a great companion and excellent jogging partner for the active family.
• Because of his size and high energy drive, the Curly is not suitable for apartment life. Instead, he requires a large fenced yard where he can play and expend his excess energy.
SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING
• Interestingly, the elaborate tight curls on the Curly-coated Retriever is effortless to maintain. The goal is to keep the coat clean and free of mats, something a weekly brushing and occasional bathing would accomplish. However, ensure you only bathe your dog with a shampoo formulated specifically for dogs to protect his skin from harsh chemicals.
• The Curly-coated Retriever needs plenty of exercises to stay healthy and happy. He should be stimulated daily or engaged with activities that will help burn his extra energy.
