FACTS ABOUT THE GREAT PYRENEES DOG BREED

Great Pyrenees Dog Breed

The great Pyrenees, also called the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, is a self-appointed guardian of the Galaxy. He is a working dog that is protective, strong, and courageous. Using his massive size, he protects his flock from wild animals.

He is nocturnal, meaning that he doesn’t stop doing his job when the day ends; he continues through the night. So, maybe he’s the universal guardian after all. Not only is the Great Pyrenees a hero in the field, but he’s also a loyal and affectionate family dog. And, like most Pyrenees owners, you’re going to be enchanted by a loving companion who’s wrapped up in a white and gorgeous coat of fur.

TEMPERAMENT OF THE GREAT PYRENEES

Confident; somehow he’s aware that his size makes him an imposing and formidable opponent.

Protective; he is a born guardian, and with this, he ensures that those he cares about are safe.

Loyal; as a companion dog, his allegiance is total with his family.

PHYSICAL FEATURES

Standing at the height of 27 to 32 inches and weighing as much as 130 pounds, the Great Pyrenees is a massive dog.

He has a pronounced mane around the neck which gives him a formidable appearance.

He has double dewclaws and featherings along the legs and thighs.

The Great Pyrenees is double-coated with a coarse outer coat and a fine undercoat. The coat color is mostly white, but it can have a touch of different colors like red, grey, or tan.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR

The Pyrenees is often protective around his family.  As a natural guardian, he has a well-developed hearing and a sharp instinct. He’s vocal too, so when he senses anything, you’d be the first to know.

The Pyrenees is very affectionate around his people. It isn’t unlikely to find him trying to squeeze in beside you on the couch, bed, or in the car. Talking of cars—he loves car rides.

The Great Pyrenees has a highly developed sense of smell and sound. On top of that, he’s nocturnal. So if you’re living with the Pyrenees, expect him to bark a lot—especially during the night. However, as with other dogs, early training and socialization would help refine this behavior.

SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING

The Great Pyrenees is not a difficult canine to groom. His coat needs to be brushed once or twice every week to remove dead hair and improve oil distribution on the skin.

Bathing should be done occasionally because too frequent washing tends to dry the dog’s skin.

The nails should be trimmed twice monthly to prevent discomfort when walking.
