The history of the Australian Terrier started in Australia, although its ancestry linked to Great Britain. In 1820, breeders created this breed from Britain’s existing rough-coated Terrier breeds. Their sole purpose was to hunt rats, mice, or snakes (which was a problem at the time).  The rough-coated Terrier (as they were initially called) achieved this aim.  However, in 1892, they were renamed the Australian Terrier.
