FACTS ABOUT THE AMERICAN ESKIMO DOG BREED

American Eskimo Dog

A dog that is fully sheathed in a thick coat of white gorgeousness. Adorable to a fault, this lovely canine has an angelic appearance, which is why it is loved by many. The “Eskie,” as most fondly called, is a member of the reputed Spitz family.
It is generally sweet-natured with deep-set eyes and a keen expression that gives nothing away. American Eskimo dogs are in three sizes:
Toy— 9 to 12 inches high, weighs 6-10 pounds
Miniature— 12 to 15 inches high, weighs between 10 to 20 pounds
Standard— 15 to 19 inches high, weighs between 25 to 35 pounds

Also, they are:

• Companion dogs
• Energetic
• Family-oriented, hence do not like being left alone.
• Charming apartment-dwellers, entertaining and fun too
• Pleaser of people

Although not much is known about the history of the American Eskimo, there is evidence to suggest it is of German origin. It is believed that in the early years, immigrant Germans settled in the United States with some Spitz dog breeds. These breeds were suspected to be the old generation from which the American Spitz dogs descended. The American Spitz dog breed was, however, renamed in 1917 as the American Eskimo Dog. It was recognized in 1995 by the American Kennel Club.
