FACTS ABOUT THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER DOG BREED
Golden Retriever Dog Breed

The beautiful and amiable Golden Retriever remains among the most prominent dog breeds in the United States. Bred in Scotland around the 19th century, they have a reputation for retrieving shot waterfowls or ducks for the ancient hunters.

Their soft mouth makes them perfectly suited for the job as they are known to return the animals mostly undamaged.

Golden Retrievers are intelligent dogs and are easy to train. With most of their hunting days over, they now enjoy being family companions who would stay loyal and devoted to their humans all through their lives.

TEMPERAMENT OF THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER

• Intelligent; when adequately trained, telling him what to do is effortless.

• Friendly; he socializes with everyone—even strangers

• Gentle, usually even-tempered and not given to aggressive behavior.

PHYSICAL FEATURES

• Golden Retrievers have a well-rounded and muscular body. They weigh between 55 to 75 pounds and are about 22 to 24 inches tall.

• The double-coat is lush and can be straight or wavy with heavy featherings on the neck, thigh, and tail.

• Just as the name suggests, Golden Retrievers are majorly seen in magnificent shades of gold, cream, or yellow colors.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR

• The Golden Retriever is adorable and knows it. He’s also lively and very playful. It isn’t unlikely to find him making a run for the pool, lake, or any water body. As a result of their origin, Goldens love water, and all water-related sports.

• Golden Retrievers are usually gentle and well-behaved around everyone (including strangers). He might not be a good watchdog as he’s more likely to jump and wag his tail (rather than bark) when he meets someone new.

• Their soft, gentle, and charismatic nature makes them do well around kids. Watching a Golden Retriever and a child play is an absolute delight.

• Because of their working heritage, Goldens are happier when given work to do. It could be something as simple as retrieving a ball or agility and obedience training.

• Whatever you do, do not isolate a Golden Retriever; he’s happiest when made a member of the household and included in every family activity.

SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING

• Golden Retrievers are heavy shedders and, as a result, need constant grooming to eliminate matting and discourage shedding. Daily brushing of the coat is recommended.
• Brushing the teeth two to three times a week is essential to prevent bad breath and tartar formation.
• The hyperactive Golden Retriever thrives on activity and, therefore, should be exercised for about 45 to 60 minutes daily.
