FACTS ABOUT THE MASTIFF DOG BREED

Mastiff Dog Breed
Large and imposing, the Mastiff is considered to be the world’s largest dog breed. He is massive and has the look of a big bully. But looks can be deceiving as this dog is known to be incredibly sweet and affectionate. He’s a big dog, but with an even bigger heart, which he doesn’t hesitate to show to everyone he sees as family.

Docile as the Mastiff is, you don’t want to mess with him. He can assume the role of a protector and defender in an instant if he feels his family is being threatened. Mastiffs, also known as Old English Mastiffs, were developed in England in the early 19th century. Modern Mastiffs are excellent family guard dogs—a role in which, given their enormous size, they are perfectly suited for.

TEMPERAMENT OF THE MASTIFF

Courageous; this breed fought with wild animals, so they wouldn’t hesitate to confront any threat with equal confidence.
Affectionate; he’s so sweet and full of love for his family
Good-natured; he’s docile, calm, quiet, and usually not given to aggressive behavior

PHYSICAL FEATURES

• Mastiffs have a massive body frame. And with a weight that can exceed 250 pounds, they’re arguably the heaviest dog breed in the world.
• The head is large, square-shaped, and it fits the body frame.
• A Mastiff’s coat is short, fine, and smooth. It is available in a limited variety of colors such as fawn, apricot-fawn, silver-fawn, or brindle. Regardless of the coat color, there’s always a notable shade of black on the muzzle, ears, nose, and around the eyes.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR

• The Mastiff is noble, and his docility is unparalleled among other dog breeds of equal size. He is not given to fits of rage or aggression. And despite his size, he remains calm, even in the face of provocation.
• The Mastiff isn’t suited for apartment living. He’s a large pup who needs enough room to go about and do his thing without the fear of knocking things down. Keep him in a securely fenced yard with adequate space, and he’ll be delighted.
• The Mastiff is an excellent companion dog who loves being with people. His love for kids is noticeable, and his gentle temperament often makes him get along well with them.
• As big dogs, Mastiffs require constant physical and mental stimulation to stay healthy. Inactive Mastiffs will be unhappy and are likely to find other ways to keep themselves busy—most of which will be destructive.

SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING

• Mastiffs do not tolerate high temperatures, so do well to ensure your dog stays cool and properly hydrated at all times.
• To keep them active, maintain a daily routine of 30 to 40 minutes walk every day.
• Brush his smooth coat once every week and limit baths to only when necessary.
