FACTS ABOUT THE GREAT DANE DOG BREED

Great Dane Dog Breed
Not called "great" for nothing, the Great Dane is a large and imposing dog breed. As the tallest dog in history, he’s fondly called the gentle giant. He has a well-defined, robust, and athletic build, which he carries with elegance. Don’t be fooled by his "Apollo" status. He is of noble origin, even-tempered, and a domestic dog who wants nothing more than to be with his family.

Although it is not entirely clear the exact time the Danes came to be but used their ancestors for hunting bears thousands of years ago. If you trace back their nobility to the 1600s when, as Kammerhunde (chamber dogs), they protected German princes from assassins.

TEMPERAMENT OF GREAT DANE

Good-natured; he is gentle and usually not given to aggressive behavior
Affectionate; he loves everyone—including strangers
Protective; his hunting instincts would set in if he senses that a family member is in danger

PHYSICAL FEATURES

• Great Danes have a large frame with heavy bones and a square build. The legs are strong, powerful, and are carried by an equally muscled body. They can weigh over 180 pounds and reach a height of 31 inches.
• Naturally, the ears are long and floppy. But when cropped, they stand erect and are shaped like a triangle on the dog’s head.
• The coat is short, smooth, shiny, and may appear in different colors like fawn, brindle, mantle, black or blue.

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR

• Great Danes are very affectionate dogs, and they often get along well with everyone they come in contact with –even unfamiliar people. It isn’t unlikely to see a Dane wanting to enjoy a couch-time with his human companion.
• Gentle giants have an excellent generic nature, which makes them ideal for families who have children and other pets. They are not known to get aggressive when in the company of other dogs, either. However, as with other dog types, early socialization is advised.
• Great Danes can be protective around family members. Their tenacity and courage will often be displayed when they sense any threat around those they care about them.
• The Danes are excellent guard dogs with their intimidating size and loud barks. Anyone up to no good will get the warning memo and instantly back off.

SPECIAL CARES AND GROOMING

• Great Danes are an active dog breed. Therefore, they require a daily exercise of about 30 to 60 minutes to maintain their physical and mental health.
• Be careful with your Dane puppies! They’re highly energetic and are at a high risk of getting their soft bones broken.
• Brush your Dane’s sleek coat once every week to remove dead hair and improve the skin’s oil distribution.
